Bold Julius

Ancient Ransomware

Julius Caesar was kidnapped in 75 BC on his way back to Rome. Pirates held him captive in what is now Turkey for 38 days. Initially they set their ransom demand at 20 "talents", which was the going rate for a standard senator ransom those days. (Imagine, a standard ransom!) But the story goes that Caesar said it should be at least 50, so the pirates decided to demand that much instead. After the ransom was paid and Caesar was freed, he sent of fleet of ships to capture and kill them. But he decreed they should be killed quickly, a mercy he felt they deserved for treating him well as a prisoner.
